What is the CFMS?
The Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) is the organization representing over 8 000 medical students from 15 Canadian medical student societies. The CFMS represents Canadian medical students to the public, to the federal government, and to national and international medical organizations.
How can I get involved with the CFMS?
There are many ways to get involved with the CFMS! The CFMS has elected positions that you can run for directly, including positions on the CFMS Board. Other positions are selected via application process, including positions such as Global Health National Officer, external representative, or member of committees such as Education, Social Media, and much more!
Other positions that are directly linked to the CFMS but run through SMSS elections include: SMSS President, VP External Jr/Sr, Global Health Liaison Jr/Sr, Global Health Advocate Jr/Sr, and Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee Reps Jr/Sr. Students in these 9 positions are both SMSS Council members as well as CFMS-associated members. In particular, the VPs External are the CFMS Representatives at the University of Saskatchewan. The SMSS can also help you become involved with the CFMS through events such as the Federal Day of Action, Global Health Exchanges, and the AGM/SGM.
What is AGM/SGM and who gets to go?
The CFMS Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Spring General Meeting (SGM) are opportunities for medical students from across Canada to get together and discuss important issues pertaining to medical education, advocacy, global health, wellness, and more.
The AGM/SGM is open to all medical students. The VP External Sr, Global Health Liaison Sr, and the SMSS President receive funding to attend the AGM. The VPs External Jr/Sr, VPs Academic Jr/Sr, and incoming and outgoing SMSS President receive funding to attend the SGM. All other students are encouraged to attend and can apply for funding through the CFMS directly (MD Financial Travel Awards) as well as through the SMSS (Dean’s CFMS Travel Awards).
