We, the Student Medical Society of Saskatchewan (SMSS), are hosting our 19th Annual Fundraiser, Miles for Smiles charity run/walk, in support of the Riversdale Community Fridge. This event will take place on Saturday, September 10th 2022 at Rotary Park in Saskatoon (COVID restrictions permitting or virtually if need be).The event will include a 2.5 km run/walk, 5 km, and 10 km run. We have had over 250 participants each year and are continuing efforts to increase participation.
All money raised will go towards Riversdale Community Fridge. Riversdale Community Fridge (RCF) is an initiative seeking to address issues of food insecurity and poverty in Saskatoon by collaborating with community partners to provide access to healthy food options while addressing food waste. RCF is a community operated fridge and pantry that provides food, and other necessary items (i.e. hygiene products, warm clothing) to individuals in need. Individuals who access the fridge are most often people who are suffering from poverty and food insecurity. Providing individuals and their families food security through community based organizations such as the RCF is a form of harm reduction, and a way that we can help improve the lives and health of our community. Additionally, RCF is a completely volunteer run, community funded organization, so the support from our fundraiser would likely go a very long way. The money that we raise for them would be used directly for grocery restocks for the fridge, as well as maintenance costs associated with ensuring the fridge is able to continue to operate.
