The SMSS is almost solely funded by the College of Medicine Dean’s Office with the goal of enriching the professional lives and learnings available to SMSS Members. Our mandate expresses interests in innovation within our province and beyond, exposure to new and thought-provoking ideas, financial responsibility, and equitable treatment of all our members. As such, there are a number of ways in which members can access funding for a range of activities. These include: Travel Awards to be used to fund trips to conferences and other learning or presenting opportunities, Student Initiative Grants to be used by students with innovative ideas that want to expand the scope of their education and/or the education of others, and General Expenses incurred during participation in a professional or academic endeavour. Members are welcomed to apply for these funding opportunities by using the respective forms.
Any member attending a conference, presenting at a conference, or pursuing an academic or professional activity beyond those delivered as part of the College’s curriculum is eligible to apply for and receive funding up to but not in excess of the expenses they incurred in the travel to and from the event and any activities/boarding costs incurred at the event. The awards recipients are selected from a pool of de-identified applications by the SMSS Funding and Oversight Committee which is chaired by the Student Groups Coordinator (SGC). The Committee meets twice a school year for each application cycle. The Fall cycle is for events taking place between October 1st to May 31st. The Spring cycle is for events between April 1st to November 31st. NOTE: Events taking place in October/November can be applied for PROSPECTIVELY in the spring cycle prior to the event or in that current fall cycle. Events in April/May can be applied for PROSPECTIVELY in the fall cycle prior to the event or in that current spring cycle.
